"Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid Thine hand upon me," Psalm 139:5. David, under inspiration of God's Spirit, tells every believer that the Lord has "beset us behind and before." The Lord goes BEFORE His people. He leads the way, He confronts all danger, He prepares the way, He is the forerunner, and He follows BEHIND His people, making sure no danger follows them and nothing can apprehend them. So the believer has no need to fear what is behind or before. The past will not catch up with us nor will the future harm us. And David adds to this, "Thou hast laid thine hand upon me." The Lord has every one of His children in His grasp. They are in the hands of their God and Savior. Not one of them shall run away, fall away, nor fade away. And when they stumble, He steadies them, putting their feet back on the Rock. In light of such mercy, grace and power, no wonder David said, 'Such knowledge is too wonderful for me!' Paul Mahan |
