The Veil of the Temple Rent in Two

"Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom...." Matthew 27:51.

Among other miraculous events that took place during our Lord Jesus' crucifixion, this one is among the most significant. Just before He commended His Spirit to the Father in death, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. That alone is proof that it was of God and not man, being torn from the top down.

Was this a mere show of God's power, or is there a lesson to be learned from this? The answer is that it teaches us that at the death of Christ, the old law of ceremonies and ordinances was ended, fulfilled in the work of Christ - Romans 10:4. When the Lord Jesus died, all of the animal sacrifices were to be finished and the entire ceremonial law done away, because He fulfilled them completely, Hebrews 10:1-10.

Yet, there is another aspect that this rent veil teaches. When God tore the veil, the mercy seat could now be seen, and the glory of God revealed for all to see. It is the same when God is pleased to remove the veil of blindness covering sinners' hearts. Life and immortality are brought to light, and the glory of God is revealed in the face of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul wrote of this to the Corinthians in saying, "And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ." (II Corinthians 3:13-14)

Just as the rending of the veil of the temple put an end to the annual ceremony of the atonement, so the sinner from whom the veil of blindness has been removed, no longer looks to anything earthly or fleshly for salvation or sanctification, but comes with boldness to the True Mercy Seat- CHRIST! No blood of bulls or of lambs is needed now. Neither is any offering of man's hands necessary nor required. By faith sinners are commanded to come to Him, with open face looking on Him who is the fulfillment of the mercy seat of old, Hebrews 4:15,16. It is His blood shed, in accordance with the righteous demands of God in the Law that gives the believing sinner a GOOD HOPE!
